How to Install the Cleanover App on Android

Cleanover for Android is an internal app that is not available on Google Play. Instead, it is shared with approved testers through Firebase App Distribution and installed with the App Tester app. This guide walks you through accepting your tester invitation, installing App Tester, installing Cleanover, and keeping the app up to date.

• Download and install the latest Cleanover build.
• Update Cleanover whenever a new build is released.

Who this guide is for

This guide is for ST staff members who have been assigned to test the Cleanover app. If you have not been asked to take part in testing, contact your team lead before following these steps. The invitation link only works for people who are expected to test the app.

Before you begin

Check that you have everything below. Having it ready avoids most installation problems.

• An Android device running Android 8.0 or later. To check your version, open Settings, then About phone, and look for Android version.
• A Google account you can sign in to. It does not need to be a Cleanover account, but you must be able to access its email, because the invitation is linked to that address.
• A stable internet connection. Wi-Fi is recommended, because each build is downloaded in full.
• Enough free storage for the app and future updates.

Important: Use the same Google account in every step. The account that accepts the invitation must also be the account you use in App Tester on your device. If the accounts do not match, Cleanover will not appear in App Tester.

Step 1: Open the tester invitation

Open the Cleanover tester invitation link. You can open it on your Android device or on a computer:

The invitation page explains that you have been invited to test Cleanover. Opening it on your Android device is usually easiest, because the next steps also take place on that device.

Step 2: Sign in with your Google account

When prompted, sign in with your Google account. Choose an account you use regularly and can access at any time. Firebase registers this email address as a Cleanover tester, so you will need the same account again in Step 4.

If your device has several Google accounts, check carefully which account is selected before you continue.

Step 3: Accept the invitation

Select the option to accept the invitation. This adds you to the Cleanover tester group and gives your account access to Cleanover builds.

When the invitation has been accepted, the page confirms that you are now a tester and guides you toward installing App Tester.

Step 4: Install and open App Tester

App Tester is the Firebase app that lists the test builds you can install. On your Android device, open:

1. Install App Tester if it is not already on your device.
2. Open App Tester.
3. Sign in with the same Google account that accepted the invitation.

After you sign in, App Tester shows the apps you have been invited to test.

Step 5: Download and install Cleanover

1. In App Tester, select Cleanover.
2. Tap Download to download the latest build.
3. If Android asks for permission to install apps from this source, allow it. Android requires this for any app that does not come from Google Play.
4. Wait until the installation is complete. Do not close App Tester while the download is in progress.

When the installation finishes, you can open Cleanover from your app drawer or Home screen, like any other Android app.

How to verify the result

• The Cleanover icon appears in your app drawer.
• Cleanover opens without an error message.
• In App Tester, Cleanover shows that the latest build is installed and no newer download is available.

Keep Cleanover up to date (mandatory)

Cleanover is an internal app, and new builds are released often to fix problems and add features. Testing an old build wastes time, because an issue you report may already be fixed.

• Always update to the latest build before you use or test the app.
• Do not use outdated versions for testing or demonstrations.
• Report issues only from the latest available build.

To update, open App Tester, select Cleanover, and download the newest build when one is available. Firebase may also notify you by email when a new build is ready.

Common issues and solutions

Cleanover does not appear in App Tester

You are most likely signed in to App Tester with a different Google account from the one that accepted the invitation. Sign out of App Tester, sign in with the correct account, and check again. If it still does not appear, open the invitation link again and confirm that the invitation was accepted.

Android blocks the installation

Android blocks apps from unknown sources by default. When prompted, open the settings screen that Android shows and allow App Tester to install apps. Then return to App Tester and tap Download again.

The invitation link says it is invalid or expired

Contact your team lead and ask for a new invitation. Do not use an invitation link forwarded from another person’s email.

The download stops or fails

Check your internet connection and free storage, then try the download again. Switching to a stable Wi-Fi network usually solves the problem.

My device is not supported

Cleanover requires Android 8.0 or later. If your device cannot be updated to a supported version, ask your team lead about using another test device.

Best practices

• Use one Google account for the invitation and App Tester, and write down which account it is.
• Check App Tester for updates at the start of every testing session.
• Include the build number when you report an issue so the team can reproduce it.
• Keep notifications from Firebase enabled so you know when a new build is available.
• Do not share the invitation link outside the assigned testing group.
